General Procedures

Eligibility | 8xxx Course Restrictions | Obtaining Grades | Canceling Courses

Student Eligibility

Course eligibility is, in the final analysis, the responsibility of the course instructor. However, it is the joint responsibility of UNITE, graduate advisors and industrial site coordinators to advise you of the kind of background you should have to perform satisfactory in any of the UNITE courses. The current course description is available on the UNITE web page.

Restrictions on 8-XXX Level Courses

You can register in any 8-XXX level course only if you are enrolled in the Graduate School. Both undergraduates, adult special students in IT or other colleges and GRAD-PRD students who wish to take an 8-XXX course must receive approval from the Graduate School.

  1. You must be at least a senior, an adult special student, GRAD-PRD student or a student in a post-baccalaureate program.
  2. You have at least a B (3.0) average in the last 90 credit as an undergraduate AND at least a 3.0 in graduate or post-baccalaureate work, if taken
  3. You have not been rejected for admission to Graduate School or graduate from a non-accredited school.
  4. You have the strong endorsement of both the instructor and director of graduate studies in the program where the course is offered.
  5. You have obtained academic transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate). These transcripts need not be official. Transcripts MUST indicate that a baccalaureate degree was awarded.
  6. After the UNITE office receives the transcripts, we will obtain the permission of the course instructor as well as the director of graduate studies in the program where the course is offered for approval.

You should be aware that you may complete no more then 3 (three) 8-XXX level courses on this exception basis. 8-XXX level courses completed as an undergraduate may not be transferred to a graduate program.

UNITE students who wish to seek such an exception are not officially registered in an 8-XXX level course until the UNITE Office verifies that approval has been granted. This process takes up to 3 weeks. If you plan on petitioning into an 8-XXX level course, you must register by the UNITE deadline.

Obtaining Grade at the end of the Term

UNITE students will have their grades sent out by the UNITE Administrative staff according to the following:

  1. The Grade Release Authorization, reverse side of the UNITE Registration Information sheet, must be checked to receive grade.
  2. Grades will be a screen printout of what is on student’s record for a given term.
  3. Graduate will be printed on University of Minnesota watermarked paper.
  4. A statement will be printed “in red” on the grade report stating that the printout is “for tuition refund only – not an official transcript”. Grades will be sent out by class when officially posted on the University of Minnesota student database. If the instructor submits an “I” (Incomplete) for the entire class, grade reports for that class will be held until grades are submitted and official. If an individual student receives an “I” than that student will be sent the “I” grade. The course grade, when assigned, will need to be obtained by the student – UNITE will not send out automatically.

Canceling a Course

ALL CANCELLATIONS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE UNITE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE.

UNITE students should not cancel the course themselves on line.
