Podcasts and RSS Feeds

Podcasts | RSS Feeds

Podcasts are available to UNITE-enrolled students ONLY. UNITE courses are the intellectual property of the course instructor and the University of Minnesota - all downloaded podcasts must be deleted at the end of each semester in accordance with UNITE Policies.

UNITE-enrolled students have the option to download podcasts of each lecture. This may be done either by logging into the course's WebVista section to download podcasts individually as needed or by setting up an RSS feed to automatically download each podcast using a podcast aggregator program (such as iTunes, available for Windows and Macintosh from Apple at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ Image to indiate a link to a web page outside the UNITE web site, which opens in a new window.).

Benefits:

  • Once fully downloaded, the files can be played back anytime, at full quality, even without an internet connection.

  • The downloaded files are also ready to be loaded onto a video iPod, Playstation Portable, or any other device that supports MPEG-4 video playback.

Podcasts

For each course, UNITE-enrolled students see a listing of podcasts in each WebVista course section, listed by date. Simply click on the podcast link for the individual session you wish to download to start the download. Once downloaded, you may view it in a podcast aggregator such as iTunes or any other device that supports MPEG-4 video playback such as an iPod or Playstation Portable.

To try downloading this Demo Podcast.
(You may have to right-click and choose "Save Link As")

Notes:

  • The video files may be quite large (600+ MB), and must download completely before playback is possible.
  • Students with slower connections are advised to subscribe, so the files will automatically begin downloading as soon as they become available.
  • You MUST be a registered UNITE student to access course RSS feeds. X.500 account validation will be required.

RSS Feeds

RSS is an acronym for "Really Simple Syndication."  UNITE courses offer RSS Feeds for podcasts to UNITE-enrolled students.

For podcasts offering an RSS Feed, you subscribe once and all podcasts that follow will download automatically as they become available. Subscribing to an RSS Feed is typically a matter of clicking and dragging the podcast RSS link to iTunes (or another podcast aggregator).

For a our demonstration RSS feed, drag this link into iTunes to subscribe, or right-click
and copy the link address into your preferred podcast aggregator: UNITE RSS Demo.

For each course, UNITE-enrolled students see a similar link listed above that course's streaming video links. Simply drag or copy the link into iTunes (or another podcast aggregator) to subscribe. Our demo video should begin downloading automatically
