Linux notes
Although Apple's QuickTime Player is not available for Linux, compatible players do exist. The most popular of these is MPlayer, which can play our downloadable podcast videos, and features a separate Firefox browser plug-in for viewing our embedded streaming video.
Here are some download instructions for different Linux distributions:
-
Gentoo: Install MPlayer and Browser Plug-in
-
Ubuntu: Use Automatix to easily install MPlayer and plug-in
If you need assitance installing MPlayer on a different distribution of Linux, feel free to Submit a Trouble Report and please specify what distribution you are using.
- A consistent Internet connection speed of 768 kbps or greater
This is required only for our streaming video. You can use our bandwidth tester to estimate your connection speed, or consult your Internet provider or network administrator.
- Podcast Aggregator
A podcast aggregator such as iTunes (for Windows and Macintosh) is required only for subscribing to RSS feeds or viewing downloaded podcasts.
Important Firewall Information:
Students who plan to view the lectures at their work site are advised to check with their company's network systems administrator concerning firewall issues. You may be able to configure QuickTime to bypass the blocked ports (see our FAQ, Question #2), but experience indicates that in many cases firewalls need to be reconfigured before access to streaming video material is allowed.
Suggested monitor resolution:
UNITE recommends 1024 x 768 or higher for best results.
When viewing the "two-pane" widescreen format, a monitor resolution of at least 1280 x 720 is recommended for optimal viewing.
